About Us

Rehearsals

The orchestra rehearses weekly on Sunday evenings, usually in Trevelyan college's James Knott Hall.

We have a mixture of full orchestra rehearsals and sectionals, all working towards a concert at the end of each term.

We also have several outreach events, including playing for the Christmas Lights switch-on in Durham and performing an interactive concert at the Gala Theatre for Primary School children.

Auditions

The Palatinate Orchestra will be holding their annual auditions  during freshers’ week and week 1 of Michaelmas term. To sign up please visit the Experience Durham freshers’ fair!

DUPO is a high quality orchestra which prides itself in playing exciting challenging repertoire, as well as having a strong emphasis on being a friendly and social organisation.

For auditions we ask that you prepare a short unaccompanied piece of your choice which is no longer than 5 minutes. You will also be given a short sight reading passage which you will have time to look at and prepare just before your audition. Then to end with you will have a chance to ask questions and we can get to know you better. The auditions really are not something to be worried about- we try to make them as relaxed as possible!

For DUPO there is no set standard we expect you to be and you don’t need to have taken any music exams, all we ask for is lots of enthusiasm for making music! Orchestral experience is not a necessity, but it can really help.

For those auditioning on two or more instruments you will need book an audition slot per instrument and each audition is viewed independently. Also, for woodwind, brass and percussionists who play auxiliary instruments, such as the oboe and cor anglais, or flute and piccolo, please bring them to the audition.

Conductor Auditions

The post of conductor is auditioned at the start of Summer term. Anyone wishing to apply for this role should email DUPO at palatinate.orchestra@durham.ac.uk
